It is 2002. I teach English at Sugino Fashion College. The four-year vocational school is in Tokyo. The English classes have many students. The forty students in my class are enthusiastic but not very good at English.

A young man with fingernail polish sits with his buddies. Ten- percent of the students in Sugino Fashion College are male. These guys wear ear and nose rings. I want to have a conversation about the nail polish: Why did he choose a dark color? Did people comment?

But I continue the lesson according to the book. There is an upcoming lesson about personal ornamentation.

A few weeks later, he wears a light blue turquoise nail polish. The conversation is now appropriate.

"That’s nice nail polish," I say. I follow the book pattern of how to compliment personal appearance.

"Thanks," he says. "I painted them yesterday. "

"Oh, same as me." I hold up my pink polished nails.

He had not painted the nails on the index finger and thumbs.

"How long will it last?" I ask.

He doesn't reply.

"A week? " I prompt.

He shakes his head no, and gestures that the manicure will not last as long as a week.

I want to suggest a topcoat. But there is no time.

The matte color and blunt shape of the nails are becoming. His English responses are simple and therefore seem fluent.
