先週　私は　友達の娘の　手伝いをした。彼女は　今バルセロナで　大学院生だ。　専門は　 生物医学。　彼女は　レポートを　書いた。　英語なので、　難しい。日本人だから。　実 験(じっけん）に　ついてのレポート　なので、　専門語が　たくさん　ある。　例えば、「STEMNESS」.は幹細胞のことです。癌の幹細胞の仮説について　書きます。ゆうこさんは　癌の治療法を　探しています。　




五年前、電話で、ゆうこさんと　話しました。　「好みの主題は　古代日本語。」と 高校3年生　は　言いました。


私は　言いました。「あそうですか。　猫という単語は　中国語からの借用語です。中国語で、　猫の発音は　パンです。」


ゆうこさんは　説明しました。「はい。　日本語の発音では　寝ると猫は似ています。猫は　寝るのが　大好きですから。」



ゆうこさんの家で　私は　彼女に合いました。　私は　ゆうこさん　と　妹の　英語の宿題を　手伝いました。　宿題を　終わる時、かれらは　私の　日本語を　手伝います。三人は　２カ国語(にかこくご) を話せる。でも、　日本人は　日本語を　話して、　私は　英語を　
話しました。　しかし私たちは　 互いを　分かります。

私は宿題の　レポートのなかで間違った言葉を　つかった 。　「まだ」と　「もう」　は　反対　でした。

ちかこさんは　正しい　言葉を　教えてくれました。　ちかこさん　は　言いました。「英語で、　同じ問題が　あります。」

ちかこさん　は　,記憶法　（きおくほう）を　歌いながら、けらけらと笑います。

Last week I helped the daughter of some friends. Now the young woman lives in Barcelona; she is a graduate student. She studies biochemistry. She wrote a report in English. It was difficult to write in English because she is Japanese. Writing above an experiment, she must use many technical terms, such as “stemness.” These terms describe cancer stem cells. Yuko wants to cure cancer.

Five years ago, I talked to Yuko by telephone. “My favorite subject is the ancient Japanese language,” the then high school senior said.

“Is that so?” I commented. *I heard that the Japanese word for ‘cat’ comes from a pun in Chinese.”

Yuko explained. “Yes. The pronunciation is similar to the word for ‘sleep.’ And cats like to sleep.”

Around the same period of time, I visit Yuko and her family at their house. I helped Yuko and her younger sister with English language homework. After their homework was complete, they helped me try to acquire use of the Japanese language. The three of us carried on a curious bilingual conversation. But the Japanese people spoke Japanese and I spoke English. Nonetheless, we could each understand what the others said.

I made mistakes in word usage in my Japanese report. I confused “already” and “not yet.” Chikako corrected my errors. She said, “In English, I have the same confusion with the same words.”

She happily sang a memory rhyme for “already” and “not yet.”

私は　イギリスの映画を　みています。　シャーロック　ホームズです。　

殆んどのシリーズは殺害についてですが、　惨たらし（むごたらし）　くはない。惨たらしい　（むごたらしい）　映画は嫌いです。　

普段はミステリ　が　嫌い　です。　でも　シャーロックホームズは　いつも　面白い　話　だと　おもいます。 論理（ ろんり ）が　好き　ですから。　



シャーロックホームはいつも、「このなぞの真相（しんそう）を　つきとめ　なければならない」
と思っています。その内に　ミステリーのなぞがわかります。


肺がんも　同じだと　思う。　その内に　 治療方法が　発見されると思う。

私の顔に　 死相が　見えます。　薬のおかげで、　私は　痛くない。私の肺がんは　ほかの
家族の肺がん　よりも　家族を驚かすことはなかった。

I have been watching a British movie series of Sherlock Holmes. Although the stories mostly involve murder, they are not gruesome. I do not like blood and gore.

Usually, mysteries are not my cup of tea. However, I always find the adventures of Sherlock Holmes interesting because of the logical reasoning.

Sherlock Holmes wants to solve the puzzle. Finally, the mystery will be understood.

Lung cancer is the same, I think: eventually, a cure will be discovered.

On my face, I see the shadow of death. Thanks to medicine, I feel no pain. Lung cancer is not unprecedented in my family and maybe mine is therefore not as shocking. I hope there will not be the same devastation of spirit among the living.

日本に来てから、　私は　パソコンで　ひらがなと　カタカナと　漢字　を　初めて　書いた。　　
文字を書くことはマジックのようである。



６月１８日、　書きにくい漢字に　ついて、　「パーソナルコンピュータおよび携帯電話の広まった使用は漢字の使用をもっと簡單にする。」と 新聞に　出ていました。だから、　 「常用漢字見直し、191字増加へ」と 見出しに　書いてありました



私は　日本語で　新聞　を　読めません。　でも、　私には　書くことが　 最もよい学習方法　です。

ある日、　友達はいった。　「家内は　日本人ですが、　英語を　話します。僕は　日本語で読むことと　書くことが　下手です。」


ほかの　友達　は　いった。「 恋人は　中国人ですが、　日本にいるので、私たちは　日本語を　
話せます。」



私は　徐々に 日本語を　書くことにより学習している。例えば、　この日記をつけることで。

In Japan, I first wrote Japanese scripts -- hiragana, katakana, and kanji -- by computer. Seeing those new strange shapes appear on the computer screen was like magic.

Today, I read a newspaper article about kanji that are difficult to write by hand. Due to the widespread use of computers and cell phones, difficult words have become easier to write. “The government list of everyday kanji will increase by 191,” the headline read.

I cannot read a newspaper in Japanese. But writing is the best way for me to learn the language.

The other day, a friend said, “My wife is Japanese, but speaks English. Therefore, I can speak Japanese, but am not skillful at reading or writing Japanese.
"

Another friend rejoined, “My partner is Chinese, but living in Japan, we speak Japanese to each other.”

I gradually learn to write Japanese. This diary is an example.
