先週　私は　友達の娘の　手伝いをした。彼女は　今バルセロナで　大学院生だ。　専門は　 生物医学。　彼女は　レポートを　書いた。　英語なので、　難しい。日本人だから。　実 験(じっけん）に　ついてのレポート　なので、　専門語が　たくさん　ある。　例えば、「STEMNESS」.は幹細胞のことです。癌の幹細胞の仮説について　書きます。ゆうこさんは　癌の治療法を　探しています。　




五年前、電話で、ゆうこさんと　話しました。　「好みの主題は　古代日本語。」と 高校3年生　は　言いました。


私は　言いました。「あそうですか。　猫という単語は　中国語からの借用語です。中国語で、　猫の発音は　パンです。」


ゆうこさんは　説明しました。「はい。　日本語の発音では　寝ると猫は似ています。猫は　寝るのが　大好きですから。」



ゆうこさんの家で　私は　彼女に合いました。　私は　ゆうこさん　と　妹の　英語の宿題を　手伝いました。　宿題を　終わる時、かれらは　私の　日本語を　手伝います。三人は　２カ国語(にかこくご) を話せる。でも、　日本人は　日本語を　話して、　私は　英語を　
話しました。　しかし私たちは　 互いを　分かります。

私は宿題の　レポートのなかで間違った言葉を　つかった 。　「まだ」と　「もう」　は　反対　でした。

ちかこさんは　正しい　言葉を　教えてくれました。　ちかこさん　は　言いました。「英語で、　同じ問題が　あります。」

ちかこさん　は　,記憶法　（きおくほう）を　歌いながら、けらけらと笑います。

Last week I helped the daughter of some friends. Now the young woman lives in Barcelona; she is a graduate student. She studies biochemistry. She wrote a report in English. It was difficult to write in English because she is Japanese. Writing above an experiment, she must use many technical terms, such as “stemness.” These terms describe cancer stem cells. Yuko wants to cure cancer.

Five years ago, I talked to Yuko by telephone. “My favorite subject is the ancient Japanese language,” the then high school senior said.

“Is that so?” I commented. *I heard that the Japanese word for ‘cat’ comes from a pun in Chinese.”

Yuko explained. “Yes. The pronunciation is similar to the word for ‘sleep.’ And cats like to sleep.”

Around the same period of time, I visit Yuko and her family at their house. I helped Yuko and her younger sister with English language homework. After their homework was complete, they helped me try to acquire use of the Japanese language. The three of us carried on a curious bilingual conversation. But the Japanese people spoke Japanese and I spoke English. Nonetheless, we could each understand what the others said.

I made mistakes in word usage in my Japanese report. I confused “already” and “not yet.” Chikako corrected my errors. She said, “In English, I have the same confusion with the same words.”

She happily sang a memory rhyme for “already” and “not yet.”
