The mountain range is Higashi-yama, literally, eastern mountains.

Under the bushes, the lawn had been torn up. It was neat, I thought. I imagined a gardening project.

“Do you think the wild pigs did that?” a fellow teacher asked.

“Wild pigs? Here? No,” I replied.

A week later, the other teachers showed me a notice in Japanese: “There are wild pigs. Danger.” The flyer was on all the tables in the lobby.

In the teachers’ room, we said, “There are wild boar.”

We looked out the window. The lawn was still gouged.

“Really? Wild pigs. I want to see them,” I said.

All day, and the next week, I enjoyed looking at where the boars had dug. Afternoons are warm and quiet, but the evenings here are not calm, I thought.

The campus is in Osaka, a half hour bus ride uphill from the train station. The bus route winds through fields and forests. By the end of the route, nobody is on the bus except students. The campus is stark cement buildings.

The native inhabitants here are not students.

The sunrise point is far south along the Higashi Yama range (East Mountains) in Kyoto, Japan.

iPhone

I want an iPhone. I will get one this week in Japan.

My cell phone has a problem. The power suddenly stops. The problem gets worse. Web surfing was interrupted. An important phone call was interrupted.

The phone shop, SoftBank, lent me a phone, but could not repair mine because mine had been Unlocked. In the United States, I had had the software re-written on my Vodafone 802SE model. I unlocked it for local US use. I change the SIM card at the international airport.

The iPhone service will cost about 6000 yen a month. The phone is free if I keep it for two years. I have been paying about 3000 yen a month, and using the Vodafone mostly for an alarm clock.

I think I will use the iPhone a lot because the cost includes unlimited access to an unrestricted Web.

Also, I think that the iPhone can be unlocked easily and safely by myself.

With this purchase, I will have a MacBook and an iPhone.

Piano Recital

My next piano recital is in April: the Marie-Gustave Durand (1830-1909) composition Waltz 1 in E-flat. This piece is a romantic intermediate level recital standard.

From today until the recital, for 18 weeks, I will play this waltz every day.

I am relieved that memorization is not needed. I cannot yet hum the melody.

Since coming to Japan in 1996, I have studied piano. There is a recital every couple of years.

I like to play for many hours.

In my Kyoto performances, most other players are in elementary school. So I am at an advanced level. I play at the end of the program.

私の音楽発表会は　４月　です。　 マリーオーギュストデュラン（1830-1909）が作曲したワルツ第1で、Eフラット、83作品。スタンダードでロマンチックな作品です。

発表会 まで、今から毎日このワルツを弾きます：18週間。

覚えなくてもいいので　安心です。私はまだメロディを知らない。

私は1996年に日本に来てからピアノを練習してきた。発表会 は、数年おきにあります。

You are like seaweed.

In the Thousand Leaves collection, poet Hito Maru on a trip far from home recalled his wife sleeping by him to the sinuous waving of seaweed.　

You newlyweds are at the opposite end of life from me.
You surely love each other. You share two languages as well, Japanese and English.

Dustin, like me, often visits his homeland of the United States. The U.S. is not very far. Our families are close, too. Dustin is my cousin's son, therefore my first cousin, once removed.

Family ties are strong.

When I came to Japan, Dustin visited me in Yokohama with his mother and younger sister and elder sister. I recall that youth, handsome and playing music. I recognized the kinship. I also play piano.

Children are a mixture. For example, today Dustin’s sister attends the wedding with her baby daughter.

Congratulations.

No scuba in Guam, maybe Catalina next spring

私は　冬休みの予定をたてています。　　始めてスキューバダイビングにとりくみた いと思います。８ 日間、　２０万の予算で、グアムに行こうと思います。それらは先週までの思考だった。

しかし今週　考えなおしました。今年　冬休み　私は　どこにも行
きません。

この決定には3つの理由がある。
第一は、　航空運賃が私が予想していた額の3倍かかることです。

第二に、私は　グアムの人とスキューバダイビングについて　話し合いましたが、彼の話すことが　信じられません。どのぐらいの滞在が必要かききましたが、彼の答えは　７日間だったり、　９日間だったりした。　どちらが正しい　答えか分かりません。

第三に、叔父さん　のスキューバダイビングの友達は　言いました。　「グアムへ行っていない。別の島に行く。パラオと呼ばれる場所に行く。」

I plan winter vacation. Last week I had considered scuba for 8 days for about $2000 in Guam.

However, this week I have changed my mind. I won’t go anywhere for winter vacation. There are three reasons.

First, airfare was three times as much as I had thought.

Second, I lost confidence in the person in Guam. I asked how long instruction would last, and he told me seven days, and then he told me nine days. I didn’t know which answer to believe.

Third, my uncle’s scuba diving friend made a suggestion. “Don’t go to Guam. Go to another island. Palou is a better place.”

Palou is a republic in the South Pacific. The airfare and hotels are expensive. Including scuba instruction, the cost would be about 4000 dollars.

It was too expensive for me. The time and place were wrong. Maybe I will go on a one-day introductory dive at Catalina, an island off the coast of California.

I was a little disappointed. However, after anticipating setbacks, I am glad that the problems appeared sooner rather than later.
