Teaching Darwin in Japan

This year, I teach a class in Anglo-American culture.  I chose the subject of Darwin.  I chose the book about his sea trip.  It is a diary of a five year ship voyage from England to South America.

The students must have high English skills.  Each must have at least a 730 TOEIC score.

All students knew the name of Darwin.  All students knew he was famous for the idea of evolution.  None of the students had read Darwin.

The class plan is simple.  We read and discuss one chapter every week.

Darwin wrote about his observations in South America.

Groups of students present observations about Japan.

I have learned many things about Japan.

--Okinawan people live longest.

--Japanese monkeys don’t need long tails to swing from trees.  Monkeys travel safely on the ground.

--Very few Japanese prefectures are inland.

The class is fun for everyone, I think.

今年、私はアングロ·アメリカ文化のクラスを教える。私はダーウィンの主題を選んだ。私は彼の海の旅についての本を選びました。それはイギリスから南米までの5年間の航海日記です。

学生は、高い英語力を持っている必要があります。それぞれが少なくとも730 TOEICのスコアを持っている必要があります。

The Return

My cat died on a Monday. On Friday, I lost my pencase. I keep my personal seal, my chop, in the pencase. I lost the pencase after I signed in to the Osaka University teacher’s book.

I use the seal infrequently. But the seal is needed for very important monetary transactions: university salary, rental contracts, and medical reimbursements.

I waited a few days. Maybe I had dropped the pencase in the bus or on the train. My business card was inside; maybe somebody would call.

The pencase and the hanko were not so important. However the beautiful leather pencase was a gift from a friend.

I was grieving for my cat. He had lived a long life. We lived together in Japan.

The next Friday, I found the pencase. In my grief, I’d left it in my mailbox at Osaka University.

I felt my identity returned. It was as if the pencase had been a proxy for the loss of my cat. My cat was fixed when he was a kitten. He hid for a week. When he returned my friend drew a picture of me and the cat. “The Triumphal of the Neutral Cat,” she titled the drawing in English.

私の猫は、月曜日に死亡した。金曜日に、 私は ペンケースを失った。私は ペンケー スに判子を入れている。私は大阪大学の出勤簿に押印た後、私は ペンケースを失った。

私は判子をあまり使用しません。しかし、 判子 は大切です：大学の給与、賃貸契約、お よび医療払い戻しに必要です。

私はペンケースが戻ってくるのを数日待っていた。 バスや電車の中 でペンケース落としたのであれば、私の名刺が内部にあるので、誰かが電話をしてくれるだろう。

ペンケースと判子はそれほど重要ではなかった。しかし　美しい革の ペンケースは友人からもらった。

猫のために嘆き悲しんだ。 長い間 我々は、日本で一緒にくらした。

次のきん曜日、私はペンケースを発見した。悲しみのあまり、私は大阪大学のメールボックスにペンケースをわすれたのに気づかなかった。

私のアイデンティティが返されたと感じた。 ペンケースは私の猫の代用品のような 気がした、子猫のときに私の猫は、去勢されました。彼はショックで一週間隠れていました。
彼が戻ったときに、私の友人は私と猫の絵を描きました。
その友人はその絵を「ニュートラル猫とサンドラの勝利」と名づけました。

私は英語を教えています。テーマは、インターネットになります。いくつかのトピック：

I teach English. The theme for one of this semester’s courses will be the Internet. Here are some topics:
1. How is the Japanese internet different from other countries’?
2. What would you like to study about the internet?
3. Will the iPhone continue to be the most popular smartphone in Japan?
4. What is the difference between smart and non-smart phones?
5. Why do people still go to the library?

Typhoon: caught in the wind

Typhoon Diary

The first class of the autumn semester was September 21. The typhoon was also predicted to hit Japan that day.

“How will I know if my 9 am class is canceled?” I asked my boss on September 20.

“A storm prediction will cancel the class,” he said.

10 other English teachers read this email.

At 6 am Wednesday, I checked a weather website but there was storm warning. Nobody emailed. I went to the campus. Classes had been cancelled. My feet hurt. I was tired and angry.

I hadn’t changed my cel phone setting when I returned to Japan from the USA.

On the morning of September 21, my boss had called about the typhoon, and colleagues had sent text messages, but I couldn’t receive them.

台風日記

秋学期の最初のクラスは9月21 であった。
台風もその日に日本にやってきた。

「私の午前9時からのクラスがキャンセルされた場合、どうすればそれが分かるのですか」と、９月２０日に私は 上司に尋ねた。

「暴風警報 が出れば、クラスはキャンセルされる」、と彼は言った。

１０人の英語の先生は　彼の電子メールを　読んだ。

午前6時水曜日, 私はウェブサイトで天気予報をチェックしたが、暴風雨警報は出ていなかっ。

電子メールは受け取らなかった。

キャンパスに　いきました。

クラスはキャンセルされました。私の足は痛んだ。私は疲れて、腹がたった。

私は日本にアメリカから帰る時
電話の設定を変更していなかった。

２１日の朝、ボスは台風についてのメッセージを送っていたのに　読めません　でし た。

Hearing live music in Kyoto

９月１８日　音楽

京都での今月のライブ音楽を聞くために、私はクラブとコンサートに行きました。場所と音楽は非常に異なっていた。

最初の場所は小さな部屋だった。多くの人がタバコを吸っていました。集まった人々は、ダンサーやミュージシャンだった。音楽はジャズだった。　トランペット奏者 は　アメリカ人　でした。カジュアルな服装をした、ひょろっとした、背の高い人でした。彼は、フリーフォームのジャズを演奏。それは完全な即興でした。

次の場所は、大きな静かな建物でした。音楽はクラシックでした。 シンフォニーホールの指揮者は　日本人　でした。彼は優雅な人ですが、背が低かった。スーツを身に着けていた。
音楽はチャイコフスキーのくるみ割り人形でした。

Music. September 18

To hear the live music of the month in Kyoto, I went to clubs and concerts. The places and music were very different.

The first place was a small room. A lot of people smoked. The crowd included many dancers and musicians. The music was jazz. There was an American trumpet player. The tall lanky man was casually dressed. He played free-form jazz. It was completely improvised.

The next place was quiet large building. The music was classical music. The conductor of the symphony hall was Japanese. He was a short gracious person wearing a suit. The orchestra played Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.
