８月８日　 新しい　アパートへ　引越します

来年　４月　私は　新しい　アパートへ　引越します。　大家さんの　息子と　奥さん　
が　この　二個一の家に　帰ってくるからです。故に　大家さんは　私に　　 家を明け渡すようにいいました。

息子の 明彦さん　は　親切　です。
５年前に　私が　初めて京都に　住んだ時、　彼は　独身　で、となりに　住んで　いました。　彼は結婚すると、　京都の中心に引越しました。

私は、どうして彼がここに戻ってきたいのか　分からない。
たぶん、彼は　年よりの両親の　近くに　住みたいのだろう。 　ここには　三つの家が　あります。

前に位置するアパート　は　道に　近いので、　騒音がします　。　そして　その　アパート　は いまのアパート　より　暑い。

しかし、　私はかれらの申し出を　拒否する　こと　が　できません。

その家族は　皆さん　親切　です。

私は　ピアノを　弾くので、　彼らは　前に位置するアパート　に　防音装置を施しました。
そして　アエコン　も　 配置　します。

今いruアパート　からは東山　と比叡山が　見えます。　前のアパートからは　見えません。

おそらく　　前のアパートにも長所があるのでしよう。

August 8 Moving to a new apartment

Next year in April, I will move to a new apartment.  The owners’ son and his wife will move into the duplex.  Therefore the owners asked me to move.

Akihiko, the son, is a nice guy.

Five years ago when I moved to Kyoto, he was single and lived next door to me.  When he married, he moved to the middle of Kyoto.

I don’t know why he is returning.  Maybe he wants to be near his aging parents.  There are three houses on this piece of property at the northern edge of Kyoto.

The apartment in the front where I will move is near the street and noisy.  The front apartment, which shades my current apartment,  is also hotter in the summer. 

But I cannot argue.

The whole family is very kind.

Because I play piano, they will install soundproofing in the front apartment.  And they will also put in an air conditioner.

Perhaps the new apartment may have some good points.

春になると、　ツバメが　日本に　来ます。　日本の冬は　 寒いので　 ツバメは　大変　です。
虫がない。ツバメは　虫を　食べます。飛でいる虫をツバメはつかめます。

ツバメは　泥の巣　を　作る。時々　ツバメ　は　人エ的な　巣　を　使います。
雨により　泥の巣　は　破壊　されることがあります。

京都で　私は　ツバメ　を　見ました。子供の時には、　物語でしか　ツバメを　知りませんでした。　

ツバメの巣の近くを　歩きました。　ツバメは　私の顔のそばに　近づきました。　長
い羽が　見えました。　ツバメは巣を守ろうとしました。　


二週間後　四、五羽のスズメのひなが見えました。ひなの口は　大きい。　声も大きい。羽が
　なく、　目をつぶっています。


遅れてうまれたツバメのひなを今日は　見ました。八月　一日です。

Swallows

In Spring, swallows come to Japan.  Winter is cold in Japan so it is too difficult for swallows because there are no insects.  Swallows eat insects as both creatures fly.

Swallows build mud nests.  Sometimes they use artificial nests.  The rain can cause a mud nest to fall apart.

In Kyoto, I saw swallows; as a child, I had only read about them.

I noticed the nests as I was walking.  A swallow flew very near my face.  I could see the long feathers.  The swallow was protecting its nest.

Two weeks later, four or five baby swallows could be seen in the nest.  They had big mouths and big voices.  They had feathers but their eyes were closed.

A later clutch of swallows had hatched today, the first of August, in the same nest. 

My birthday party, age 64

誕生日は　先週　でした。　私は　六十四歳に　成りました。

通常、誕生日で　働きますが、　今年　故郷で　あった。

友人や　兄弟　と　昼ご飯　を　食べた。

歌が　二つが　ありました。　着く別な　うた　ビートルスの曲　「私は　64−歳ているとき。」「六十四歳ている時、まだ　私を　愛していますか」と　歌は　質問が　あります。

レストランのスタッフは　曲を聞いたので、　ケーキを　持って来た。

私は　すでに　肺がんの広がりを　発表していた。　　だから　誕生日パーテーに　是然　その病気を　話しません　でした。

天気が　良っかた。　カリフォルニアの夏は　穏やかです。　その反面、日本の七月　は　暑い。私たちは　なか　庭で　座って、　子供が　水泳を　しているのを、見ていました。

昼ご飯後、　車や　徒歩で　受賞式に　行ってきました。

My birthday was last week.  I turned 64.

Usually, I work on my birthday, but this year I was in my home country.  I had lunch with friends and siblings.

Two songs were sung.  The unusual song was The Beatles’ “When I’m 64.”  “Will you sill love me when I’m 64,” it asks.

Hearing the songs, the restaurant staff brought a piece of birthday cake.

I had already announced the growth of my lung cancer, so at the party it was not discussed.

The weather was fine.  California summer is mild.  Contrariwise, Japan in July is very hot.  We sat outside and could see children swimming.

After lunch, we went by car and foot to award ceremony.

Tomato stand

丘の上で　野菜　が　買えます。
今日は　初めてトマトが ならびました。
販売者　は　家から　出て来た。

バスケットの中にある野菜には　タオルがかけてありました。
私は　トマトのバスケット　二つと　ジャガ薯のバスケット　一つを　選んだ。

全部で　５００円。
「これは　あそこの　庭　で栽培したものですか」と　私は　質問を　した。
「ええ」と　彼女は　答えた。

野菜に　ついて　話を　した。

トマト　の苗は　私たち　の　頭　より　も　大きく　育った。

「薬が　使えません」と　売り手は　言いました。

「良かった」。

「あなたは　ミニトマト　を　育てたことがありますか？」
「いいえ。でも、オクラを　育っています。まだ　小さい　です。
　手を触れたので、　オクラ　が　落ちてしまいしました。 」

「キユウリのシーズンが　終わった」と　彼女は　言いました。 茶色　や　乾燥した 
キユウリのつるが　見えました。

「あそこに落ちている栗　は　食べられますか」と　私は　質問を　した。
「いいえ。　小さいので。　栗の木から　すぐ 落ちます。あなたのオクラのよう　
です。」

At the top of the hill, you can buy vegetables.

Today, for the first time this season, there were tomatoes.

The seller came out of her house.

Over the baskets of vegetable she had placed damp towels.

I choose two baskets of tomatoes and one basket of potatoes.

The price came to about 5 dollars.

“Are these from that garden next to the house?” I asked.

“Yes,” she answered.

We walked over to the garden and talked about vegetables.

The tomato plants were higher than our heads.

“We don’t use insecticide,” she said.

“That’s good,” I replied.

“Do you grow mini tomatoes?

“No, but I am trying to grow okra.  The okra is still small.  When I touch them, they fall off the plants.”

“The cucumbers are finished for the season,” she said.  The cucumber vines were brown and dry.

“Can you eat the small chestnuts on the ground?” I asked.

“No.  They are too small.  The fall from the tree, like your okra.”

Mr. Fujino, now CEO of Honda Aircraft, on arrival in the USA to head the aircraft design team.  He visited the Smithsonian, saw the Honda Civic, and hoped the Honda Jet would enjoy the same success.

Founder of Honda, Soichiro Honda, in an apocraphyl story, fashioned a stamp to cut school.  He got caught when he made similar stamps for friends whose names were not symmetrical.  However, perhaps the stamp will be good transferring success from car to aircraft.

肺がんが　大きく　なりました。そして　肺の中に　水が見つかり、その中にガンが　あります。今後は　前の薬　は有効ではありません。　だから、新薬を試みることにしました。一月間の夏休みが　３日に　短縮されました。

「悪いタイミング」　と　医者は　私に言いました。

始めて、私のがんが痛くなったので、これは　怖い　です。

前の薬のおかげで　一年間は容態が良かった　です。生活は　安心　でした。そして、　ガンは　広がりませんでした。

今、　私は　心配　です。

がんの進展がわかった後で、私は　アメリカへ　３日間　行きました。私は　賞を　もらった。楽しかった　です。私は　５分間　スピーチを行いました。観客が３００人いました。

My medical condition has changed.

The lung cancer main tumor has become larger.  Also, in the lung, liquid has been found that contains cancer cells.  The previous chemotherapy is no longer effective.  Therefore, new chemotherapy will be tried.  A planned month-long vacation in the United States was shortened to three days.

“Bad timing,” said the doctor.

For the first time, I feel pain from the cancer, and this is scary.

Thanks to the previous chemotherapy, for a year my condition was good.  I felt safe in my daily life because the cancer did not spread.

Now, I am worried.

After the new diagnosis, I went to the United States for three days to receive an award.  It was great fun.  I gave a five-minute speech to an audience of 300 people.

Osada Procedure

Osada procedure: What it is?

Named “Osada procedure” after its inventor, Dr. Osada

Surgery for the uterus, it’s for fibroid tumors.

Usefulness

Women can retain ability to give birth.

In a study of 104 women, all patients returned to having normal menstrual cycles. 26 wanted to have a baby; half of those succeeded.

Largely unknown in the world.

Many doctors remove the uterus.  But the Osada procedure conserves the uterus. 

Invention uses special methods

1.     sewing the uterus up to retain elasticity needed for pregnancy:  “triple flap” method. No overlapping suture lines.

2.     Invented around 1990.
